After an impressive stint as Chief Resident during his general surgery residency at the University of Florida, he further honed his skills during a fellowship at Duke University, focusing on Advanced Laparoscopy and Bariatric Surgery.
In 2006, Dr. Johnson brought his talents to Atlanta, joining the dynamic team at Atlanta Bariatrics. Certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners and Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery, he has been proudly recognized since 2007 as a Center of Excellence surgeon by the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). Dr. Johnson has taught courses on the latest techniques in the minimally invasive care of various surgical diseases. This has included teaching surgeons on a variety of standard surgical techniques, as well as updating surgeons on cutting-edge technologies. He has also been involved in national talks on managing all aspects of the surgical patient, including preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care. He has been one of the pioneers of new technologies in surgery, including single-incision surgery. This type of procedure leaves just one small scar, often completely hidden in the belly button. He was the first surgeon in the area to use single-incision surgery for the removal of the gallbladder and removal of the appendix, and he was also the first one to use this technique on various bariatric cases. These included Lap Band placement and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy surgery. He also specializes in varicose vein treatment.
Dr. Johnson has served in numerous hospital roles, including Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Emory Johns Creek Hospital. He has also served as Vice-Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Chief of General Surgery at Emory Johns Creek. He operates at Emory Johns Creek Hospital and Northside Forsyth Hospital, where he helped launch the bariatric surgery program. He continues to serve as the Medical Director of the Bariatric Surgery program at Northside Forsyth, where he helped establish it as a Center of Excellence in Bariatric Surgery. He also serves as Medical Director at the Atlanta General and Bariatric Surgery Center (AGBSC), which has also earned the designation of a Center of Excellence in Bariatric Surgery.
